Artist’s Statement: After the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February of 2018, high schoolers across the country were called to action, banding together to organize a nationwide memorial school walkout. For my school community, the shootings hit especially close to home. A freshman and close friend of mine lost her best friend to the shooting. Many other students were in contact with their friends as they hid, crammed into closets, hoping the texts they were sending would not be their last words.
